Transferring Credits to Public School
Q. If I decide to transfer my high school student into public school, will they accept his homeschool credits?
A. Based on Virginia law, each school district makes its own policies for students transferring into government schools. School divisions are NOT REQUIRED to accept credits from non-accredited schools, including private schools or homeschools. At the same time, they are NOT prohibited from accepting them.
Parents may have to supply standardized test scores, show that the content of their curriculum is consistent with public school curriculum, or have their student take SOL tests for grade placement. Some school districts will only accept a limited number of transfer credits. Parents can attempt to negotiate with school officials, but must ultimately submit to the policy decision of the high school.
