Even though the school year is just gearing up, it’s a good time to think about testing and what that will look like for you this year.
Do you have a high school student is considering college? This is the time of year you may start thinking about scheduling the PSAT, SAT, or ACT—and HEAV has plenty of information to help you out.
Another—relatively new—option is the Classic Learning Test (CLT). The CLT for high schoolers can be used for college acceptance at 250 colleges, including great options close to home, like Liberty University, Christendom College, Patrick Henry College, Christopher Newport University, and more. Why use the CLT? There may be many reasons the SAT or ACT might not be the best option for your homeschooled child. While other exams often cater to public school students and reflect a Common Core curriculum, CLT is written in a way that demonstrates its value for educational independence and traditional learning. As homeschoolers, if you have students who are of age and have filed a Notice of Intent, you must submit proof of progress by August 1 of each year to ensure learning is taking place.
This can be provided in a couple of different ways. An evaluation from a licensed teacher, where the child is assessed and a letter is written can provide proof of progress for the year. This may be helpful if you have a child who struggles with testing and also allows them to show their learning in a more natural and authentic way.
For older students, a report card or transcript from a community college or college can serve as proof of progress for the year.
Many, if not most, students will send proof of progress by submitting scores of a nationally normed standardized test. There are a number of assessments available for you to choose from. Some are timed and some are not. They differ in the number of sections needed to be completed and the number of questions asked. Check out HEAV’s testing section to learn more.
And—yes!—the Classic Learning Test (CLT) is an excellent choice, as well! This exam is available for students in grade three and above. In my opinion, the written format and layout are more user-friendly than some other options I have used in the past. This makes for a better testing experience for the little ones.

As we start to roll into another academic year, be sure to be thinking about and planning how you will show progress at the end of the year.
