Prepare for the General Assembly Session
The 2026 General Assembly session begins January 14 and will last 60 days. Your government affairs team is already hard at work—meeting with key leaders, introducing ourselves to new delegates, and reconnecting with longtime allies.
The team has surged to thirteen members, driving strategy, analyzing bills, sharpening counseling and advocacy, strengthening communications, and taking the fight to the Capitol with boots-on-the-ground lobbying.
Our bill reader has already reviewed more than 70 pre-filed bills—which will likely surge to more than 2,500 before the session ends—and we continually track any bills that could affect our homeschool freedom.
Make Your Voice Heard!
Did you know that contacting your state legislators is one of the most powerful ways to support homeschooling? Lawmakers want—and need—to hear from the people they represent.
Your delegate faces a deluge of bills touching every corner of the Commonwealth. Often, they know little about homeschooling and have no strong opinions on the measures that arise.
That’s where you come in.
Your calls and emails make all the difference. While HEAV can speak as an organization, you—the constituent—carry the greatest influence.
Meet Your Delegate and Senator—in Person if Possible
Schedule a quick visit (or attend a town hall) before the session begins. Introduce yourself as a homeschool parent, thank them for their service, and kindly ask for their support of parental rights and homeschool freedom. A friendly face and a real story go a long way! Always be respectful, gracious, and appreciative of their service.

Send Your Delegates and Senators a Christmas Card
As you’re sending out Christmas cards to friends and family, include your delegates! It’s just two more cards.

Share Your Story!
Lawmakers need to hear why families choose homeschooling and how well it works. Your success story is a powerful testimony! Submit it today—we’ll use these real-life examples (with your permission) when we meet with legislators.
Share your story here.
(As always, we NEVER share your contact information.)
Watch your email and HEAV’s Facebook pages for updates and action alerts. Together, let’s take these simple steps to protect our right to homeschool!
Warm regards,
Callie Chaplow
