The Power of Prayer
The power of prayer is an intimate discipline. As homeschoolers, we have the privilege of demonstrating the power of prayer to our children as they go through their school day. It is a gift to stop and pray with our children as we hear of current events in our nation and around the world. The first Thursday in May is our country’s National Day of Prayer, a day when Christians in the United States are called to pray for our nation. The National Day of Prayer website has a search tool to locate local observances for the day as well as information on the history of the event, the verse and theme for this year, Presidential proclamations, past Honorary Chairpersons, and more.
It is our awesome privilege to pray to the Creator of the universe, and this beautiful concept is something we should delight in teaching our children. Purpose in Prayer
Psalm 2:8 says, “Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.” While praying universally for healing in nations around the world is not wrong, the Bible does instruct us to be specific in our prayer. (Examine the story of the blind beggar in Matthew 20:30-34.) Learning and praying for the specific needs of nations around the world not only fulfills a Biblical call to prayer, but will offer an understanding of the struggles faced around the world and a testament to God’s faithfulness as we see His answers manifest. This website has a database of countries that includes prayer points, a summary of the country and its customs, quick facts, the current time and weather, news about the country, as well as an audio recording of music indicative of the country.
Praying for the overseers of our faith may not seem intuitive, but it not only blesses our pastors, it blesses us too. You can teach your students to develop a habit of praying for their pastors with this reference from Enjoying the Journey. The list includes seven prayers for your pastor’s personal, family, and ministry life, along with related Bible verses to encourage praying God’s Word.
One of the most exciting examples of the power of prayer is seeing how God answers it. Your teen can keep a prayer journal with the instructions in this blog post and create a written history of God’s goodness and workings in their life of prayer.
