Journey to 250: Virginia ~ Mother of Presidents 2

Continuing on our Journey to 250, this week we will be introduced to a Virginia personality who was ahead of his time in many ways, and also holds a record! Can you guess who it might be?

Here’s Our Second Presidential Personality!

Who am I?

I was born in Charles City County, on the Greenway Plantation, in Virginia in 1790. My father was friends and college roommates with Thomas Jefferson. When it comes to my education, I feel as if I was on the fast track! My father, being wealthy, paid for tutors to teach me at home. Yes, I was a homeschooled student. Because of this, I entered the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg at the age of 12 and graduated at the age of 17. I went on to study law alongside my father. With my studies, I was admitted to the Virginia bar at the age of 19. I was actually too young for this appointment, but no one ever bothered to ask how old I was! Soon after, I started to practice law in the state capital of Richmond. Did you know I am a current record holder! I hold the record for the U.S. President with the most children. I had a total of 15 kids in all! Never a dull moment! I served as vice president, for a very, very short time before taking office as president in 1841. I served until 1845. Some years after my presidency, I fell ill and died in a hotel room in Richmond. I was then buried in Hollywood…… The Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, that is.

Can you guess who I am?

Fun Activities to Do!

Our Virginia President for the week had very close ties to higher education. While it may have been a bit different, based on age and available paths of study, college was a viable option for those who wanted to take this route. Get those craft supplies ready. Many homeschool families are gearing up for the new school year. While you’re getting ready, let’s add some decoration to our spaces. Make a college flag to represent things that are important to you! This could be a representation of your homeschool!
