2026 Homeschooling Numbers on the Rise in Virginia
Homeschooling in Virginia continues to grow.
Today, after four FOIA requests over two months, HEAV has received the official 2025–2026 homeschool numbers for the school year.
According to the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE), homeschooling increased 5.34% in just one year, bringing the total number of homeschooled students statewide to 66,117.
Since the 2019–2020 school year (pre-pandemic), homeschooling in Virginia has grown by 49.5%—reaching the highest level ever recorded.
Families are choosing home education for its flexibility, stronger family connections, and the freedom to tailor learning to each child’s needs and strengths. Research consistently shows that homeschool students often meet or exceed traditional academic outcomes—and they enjoy full, active social lives through co-ops, sports teams, churches, and community programs.

A growing movement. A hopeful trend.
