Patrick Henry: Virginia History and the Power of Words
Explore Patrick Henry and his famous words, “Give me liberty or give me death!” These words are some of the most recognizable in Virginia’s history. He spoke to them on March 23, 1775, at the Second Virginia Convention in Richmond, urging Virginia’s leaders to prepare for conflict with Great Britain. At that moment, independence was anything but certain, and Henry was trying to encourage fellow delegates who were unsure about taking such a bold step.
Patrick Henry’s speech allows homeschoolers to explore much more than a famous quotation. It is a chance to study Virginia history while discovering how effective speakers use words to make an argument.
Look Closely at the Words
Older students can read Patrick Henry’s speech and look for the techniques he used to persuade his audience. The National Humanities Center’s Patrick Henry and “Give Me Liberty!” lesson provides background information, the complete speech, vocabulary, close-reading questions, and activities that examine Henry’s arguments and rhetorical strategies. As you read, you might pause to ask: Who was Henry speaking to? What did he hope his audience would do? What reasons did he give? Which words or phrases stand out as especially powerful? What emotions did he try to stir?
For younger learners, listening to the speech or watching a video presentation can be a great start. Invite them to pick a favorite phrase and draw a picture showing what it means to them.
Turn Virginia History into Writing
Patrick Henry’s story also fits beautifully with language arts. After you’ve explored the events around his speech, encourage your student to pick a topic they care about and write a short persuasive or opinion piece of their own.

Experience Virginia History With Patrick Henry
History comes alive when we can stand in the very places where it happened. This fall, Virginia homeschool families have an opportunity to experience Patrick Henry’s famous speech at the HEAV Day at the Capitol Fall Session in Richmond.
On October 29 or 30, 2026, families will begin the day at Historic St. John’s Church, where a live reenactment of the 1775 debate and Henry’s famous speech will take place. Families will then travel to the Virginia State Capitol for a chamber presentation and guided tour.
It’s a wonderful way to turn a history lesson into a living experience and remind our children that history isn’t just something we read about in a textbook. Real people stood in real places, made tough choices, and used their voices to shape what came next.
Patrick Henry’s speech has endured for generations because it reminds us of the power of conviction, courage, and words. Whether your family spends an afternoon with the speech or dives into several weeks exploring Virginia’s role in the American Revolution, there are plenty of opportunities to connect history, civics, and language arts—and perhaps even inspire your own young historian to find their voice.
