A story of a family inspired to change their lives through homeschooling
My husband and I emigrated from Iraq to the United States in 1995 and God gloriously saved us after we came here. When our son Adam became school age we sent him to public school. As that first year continued, it became clear that public school was not going to work for us, so we had Adam complete first grade there and then enrolled him in a private Christian school.
When Adam was in 4th grade we realized that, through his classmates, he was being exposed to immoral ideas that we believed he should not know about at such a young age. At this point, we felt very discouraged and sought counsel from our pastor, who suggested we homeschool.
Because of our language difficulties and lack of certification in the education field, we did not think we were qualified to teach him at home. But our pastor suggested we attend the free “How-to-Begin-Homeschooling” sessions at the convention in Richmond.. We are so glad we did. After listening to the speakers at the convention, we felt confident that we could actually homeschool Adam. We visited the exhibit hall where we were able to talk with many vendors about their products and services, as well as look at curriculum up close. After looking at many options, we decided to use ABeka’s video curriculum so that Adam could hear proper English being spoken and because they provided all the materials and would help us if we had any difficulties throughout the year.
We are very thankful our pastor suggested the HEAV convention to us and are thankful for the encouragement and support HEAV gave us as we embarked on our homeschool journey.
Today, Adam has graduated successfully and is currently enrolled at the Coast Guard Academy.
