Spotsylvania County

A parent and Virginia-certified teacher correctly submitted her paperwork to the superintendent to become a Virginia-certified tutor under the compulsory attendance law, §22.1-254. However, being unfamiliar with the law, an office representative insisted that the parent file an NOI.

After contacting HEAV for assistance, we provided the parent with information to assist the office in processing her submission properly. Although the parent was well-informed on the law, communicated it and implemented the tools HEAV provided properly, the effort was to no avail; an NOI was again requested. HEAV then contacted the Spotsylvania school district to explain the differences in the laws. Following this conversation, the district promptly processed the parent’s certified tutor paperwork under the correct statute.
