Religious Exemption for Preschoolers
Q. I would like to seek a religious exemption for my three-year-old preschooler since, as a parent, I have been teaching him from birth. Can I send a letter to the school board for my child at any age?
A. When sending a letter to the school board regarding religious exemption, you are asking the school board to recognize an exemption from compulsory education laws for a particular child. Compulsory education laws apply to children ages 5 (by Sept. 30) to 18. Since your preschooler is not yet compulsory school age and not under compulsory school laws, wait until the law applies to your child. The school board cannot recognize a RE for a student to whom the law does not apply.
