Description
Thinking about homeschooling—or simply rethinking how your child learns best? The 43rd Annual Virginia Homeschool Convention, held June 4–6, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia, invites families, educators, and community members to explore education that is flexible, future-ready, and deeply personal.
Open to the public, this three-day education conference brings together parents, students, and professionals interested in learning innovation, workforce preparation, family leadership, and educational choice. With 30+ nationally recognized speakers and 120+ workshops, the convention addresses the real questions families are asking right now—without pressure, politics, or pretense.
Headlining the event are Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm, the self-described “lunatic farmer” whose work on stewardship and sustainable living has influenced families nationwide, alongside Nick Freitas and Tina Freitas—parents, veterans of the public square, and unapologetic champions of faith, family, and freedom. Known for their sharp wit and clear-eyed commentary, the Freitas duo brings thoughtful, often provocative conversations on culture, leadership, free markets, and what it takes to raise resilient kids in an increasingly complicated world.
Workshops span every stage of family life, from getting started and transitioning from public school to homeschooling high school, to preparing teens for college and careers, to balancing work and family life, to fostering entrepreneurship, to supporting learners with special needs, and to building an intentional vision for education—at home or beyond traditional classrooms. Content is practical, grounded, and designed to be put into action immediately.
Beyond workshops, the convention offers immersive, hands-on programming for students and parents alike. Special features include a College & Career Fair, an all-day Special-Needs Conference, STEM and media tracks, interactive labs and camps, live demonstrations, book signings, and a graduation ceremony honoring student achievement.
A large exhibit hall showcases curriculum providers, educational organizations, service professionals, and community partners from across Virginia and beyond. The popular Used Curriculum Sale draws families statewide, making the convention a regional hub for educational resources and connection.
Free How-to-Begin-Homeschooling workshops are offered in both English and Spanish, and parents of preschool-aged children may attend at no cost. While homeschooling is a central focus, the convention is equally valuable for families exploring alternative education options, supplemental learning, or innovative approaches to traditional schooling.
Hosted by the Home Educators Association of Virginia, the Virginia Homeschool Convention reflects more than 40 years of experience supporting families through education, advocacy, and community engagement. Whether you’re actively homeschooling, considering new pathways, or simply curious about the future of learning, this event offers a welcoming, informative, and engaging experience for all.
