Journey to 250: Virginia ~ Mother of Presidents 4

Who Am I?

It’s the fourth week of our journey through the presidents hailing from Virginia. In continuing on our Journey to 250, we have an interesting personality for you. Let’s see how long it takes to guess this week’s “Who am I?”

Journey to 250 Fun Facts

My life has its humble beginnings in Staunton,Virginia. Some look at my life and see the common thread of education that runs through my veins. Education is so very important to me, so much so, that I have been associated with several different notable schools. I started my college career at Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina, completing only one year before transferring to the College of New Jersey. You probably know this school as Princeton University. While at Princeton, in addition to my studies in political philosophy and history, I also balanced my time between playing football, baseball, and serving as the editor of the student newspaper. After my graduation in 1879, I went on to attend the University of Virginia School of Law. In my spare time, I lent my voice to the Virginia Glee Club. I was not in Charlottesville very long before having to leave school after falling ill. I went to my parents home in North Carolina where I continued to study law on my own. It’s like homeschool-law school!

From the University of Virginia, I went on to Johns Hopkins University, where I earned a PhD in political science, making me the only U.S. President with a doctoral degree! Continuing on with my love of education, I taught at several colleges before being made the president of my alma mater, Princeton University. After that, I began my official political career by serving as governor of New Jersey from 1911-1913.

Along the way, I met and married my first wife, who was an art graduate and an award-winning portrait artist. My wife was a great help in my political career. She learned German just so she could help me translate political science publications that were relevant to my research. What a woman!

Since all great things must come to an end, my final resting place is at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington D.C., the only president to be laid to rest there.
