Homeschool Day at the Capitol: Advocacy in Action
HEAV’s advocacy day at the Virginia General Assembly this session has been both steady and effective–last week’s Day at the Capitol and Homeschool Meet-and-Greet offered a visible reminder of why showing up still matters.
Throughout the session, HEAV’s legislative team has reviewed thousands of bills, closely tracking measures that affect homeschool freedom, parental authority, and educational choice. From proposals impacting evaluation requirements to those involving public funding and nonpublic education pathways, HEAV remains engaged—working proactively with lawmakers while keeping families informed and protected.
That advocacy came to life on Capitol Square when homeschool families from across the Commonwealth gathered in Richmond for advocacy day civic engagement. Parents and students met directly with legislators, shared their stories, and demonstrated—in person—that Virginia’s homeschool community is thoughtful, informed, and deeply invested in the future of education in our state.
Advocacy Day
A highlight of the day was the homeschool meet-and-greet at the General Assembly. We are thankful to the legislators who took time to attend, listen, and engage:
- Delegate Eric Zehr
- Delegate Griffin
- Delegate Scott
- Delegate Garrett
- Delegate Walker
- Senator Cifers
We are especially grateful to Senator Cifers for his warm welcome on the floor at the opening of the General Assembly session. That moment underscored an often-overlooked truth: homeschool families are at the center of public life—they are constituents, leaders, and active participants in Virginia’s civic process.
We encourage our members and friends to reach out and thank these legislators for their faithful support of parental rights and homeschool freedom. Thoughtful leadership deserves public gratitude!
As the session continues toward Crossover, HEAV will remain present—monitoring legislation, building relationships, and advocating with confidence, clarity, and community. Freedom is preserved not by accident, but by engagement, and this advocacy day proved once again that homeschool families are ready to lead.
