Dr. Gary and Laura House are originally from Indiana but currently live in Lynchburg, Virginia. They are parents to three children. Ryan and Megan live nearby, and Nathan resides in heaven. Early in his career, Gary served as a pastor, then as a professor, teaching at the graduate level in the area of Christian ministry. Laura is a former RN, then treasured the years as a homeschooling mom while working in marketing for the Institute for Excellence in Writing.
After Nathan’s death, Gary and Laura experienced the comfort found by spending time with other bereaved parents. Yearning to provide similar opportunities for other grieving parents and to challenge them to trust Jesus, they founded Our Hearts Are Home. Married for 40 years, Gary and Laura enjoy community with others, walking on any beach, reading, and spending time with their family.
Ten Truths About Child Loss
What can a bereaved parent expect to encounter on the grief journey? For those who are walking this difficult road, this workshop will provide encouragement and hope as the realities of losing a child are discussed. For those who have not lost a child, the information will give a better understanding of what a grieving friend might be navigating. Gary and Laura House offer helpful insights and share the hope they have found in Christ, while walking through the painful journey of losing a child.
A Homeschool Family’s Story of Loss and Hope
Homeschooling provided an opportunity for Gary and Laura House’s family to spend volumes of time learning together and developing a close relationship with their three children that extended into adulthood. Not until their youngest son, Nathan, went to Heaven, did they understand the depth of depression he had experienced, beginning at puberty. The depression ultimately led to his death by suicide. Through the darkest and most painful journey they have ever known, Gary and Laura found comfort and hope in Christ. He is the only One who can truly comfort our broken hearts.
Bereaved Parent Mini-Gathering
Exclusively for bereaved parents and grandparents, this workshop will allow time for sharing our stories with others who have also experienced loss. We will divide into small groups to introduce our children/grandchildren who are in Heaven to those in the group. We’ll learn from each other, discover helpful resources, and experience the comfort that Jesus gives. Inevitably, we gather as strangers but part as new friends.
