NCAA Requirements for Homeschooled Students

Virginia Homeschool Leagues

Homeschoolers can participate in competitive sports–football, basketball, volleyball, and more are available across the Virginia commonwealth!

NCAA Declaration Process for Homeschoolers

Homeschoolers have been accepted and excelled in the NCAA ranks for years! If you’re considering this for your homeschooled student-athlete, it’s a journey that can be both exciting and nerve-racking. But remember, you’re following in the footsteps of many successful homeschoolers! HEAV is here to guide you toward your own success story.

The following information has been helpful to many, but remember these are only suggestions. Please be sure to reach out to the NCAA Eligibility Homeschool Unit, if anything below seems to be confusing in any way.

First, be familiar with the NCAA website.

View the requirements for homeschool students here.

The NCAA must see 16 NCAA-approved core-course credits in eight academic semesters from the start of grade nine. Regardless of when you start compiling this list (transcripts and course descriptions as explained in the above homeschool kit), you will need to have this done (with the exception of grade 12) by the time you decide to which schools you are applying.

One of the many blessings of homeschooling is the flexibility to add a variety of subjects to ensure our student-athlete is well prepared for life as an adult. However, please do not be surprised if the NCAA does not need that medical finance or wood carving class. Keep in mind as you strive to meet the minimum requirements for NCAA eligibility, you will also need to remember the goal schools your student athlete intends to apply to. NCAA may have a minimum of 16 credits, but your “goal school” may ask for an additional math/science class. Be sure to check with each college you intend to apply to.
