Getting Connected with Homeschool
Q. I’m planning to homeschool this year. What is the best way to get my questions answered, connect with other homeschoolers, and find out about homeschool events?
A. Connecting with other homeschoolers is a great way to begin. Not only will you know what’s going on, but you’ll find encouragement along the way!
I suggest you sign-up for HEAV’s FREE weekly e-mail Updates and HEAV’s quarterly magazine. We’ll keep you posted about upcoming homeschool events, museum homeschool days, the latest legislative information, and important homeschool news. You’ll be encouraged by helpful articles and great resources, as well as links to many homeschool friendly websites. It’s easy to sign-up and it’s FREE!
The annual HEAV homeschool convention (June 6-8, 2019) offers an excellent opportunity on Thursday to get connect and get questions answered–FREE. You don’t even have to register to come to the three, free How-to-Begin-Homeschooling workshops that begin at noon on Thursday. In between sessions, connect with our mentors for tours of the convention center and answers to your homeschool questions. THEN, your workshop name badge serves as a ticket to the Exhibit Hall from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., a marketplace of homeschool resources from across the nation. There is no cost for any of these activities on Thursday, and you’re welcome to purchase a ticket onsite if you want to come back on Friday and Saturday.
Local support groups offer many opportunities for parents to develop friendships with like-minded families, as well as for students to participate in co-op activities, sports, science fairs, art shows, and clubs. Here’s a list of support groups that would welcome your participation.
Social media offers other great opportunities to share with fellow homeschoolers. Be sure to visit the HEAV Facebook page or join the Homeschooling in Virginia group to connect with other homeschooling parents.
We want you to get off to a good, strong start. HEAV is here to support you and help you be successful. Please call our office at 804-278-9200 or e-mail your questions to support@heav.org if we can help you with your curriculum choices, the homeschool law, or other homeschool questions.
Wishing you much success!
