Q. About how many hours of high school work equals one high school credit hour for a transcript?

A. There are several acceptable ways to calculate a high school credit hour. Your teen could complete a high-school-level text–not every problem or page–but at least 75% of the book. It should take about one year to complete.

Or your high school student could complete approximately 120-150 hours of work in a subject. This is equivalent to 50 minutes per day, five days per week, for 36 weeks.

The lower number of hours is usually calculated for an elective. Most electives receive ½ credit because they are not as intensive as a mathematics, English, or science course which receive a full credit. Also, some electives only last half a year. If that’s the case, you could have two ½ credits for two different electives. However, you should never count the same course twice or list it in two different places on a transcript.
