Homeschool Graduation | HEAV 1

Adamson, Jonah Daniel

Ruther Glen, Virginia

I am from Ruther Glen, Virginia. I am the third oldest (and eldest brother) of 11 siblings. I was born in Indiana, lived in South Dakota, and have been homeschooled all my life. I enjoy art, painting, woodworking, making sword replicas from The Lord of the Rings and other films, digital art, photography, computer games, music, movies, and books. I’ve had the opportunity to play parts in several musicals with Alpha Theatre and to travel to Ukraine to help with our family’s adoptions. I like spending time with family and friends, and I am interested in pursuing art and cybersecurity in the future. Joshua 1:9 is a favorite Bible verse of mine.

Ames,Catherine Anne

Virginia Beach, Virginia

My parents began homeschooling my four older siblings when I was 2 years old, and now—15 years later—that journey is coming to a close as I graduate. Throughout my education, I attended Young Musicians of Virginia, taking violin and piano lessons and participating in strings, band, and choir. One of the coolest opportunities homeschooling provided was being a full-time nanny last fall. I’m incredibly grateful for the love and dedication my parents and teachers have poured into me over the years, and I look forward to spending a gap year at Torchbearers Bible School in Colorado beginning this fall.

Homeschool Graduation | HEAV 2

Anderson, Savannah Grace

Fredericksburg, Virginia

My homeschool journey began in sixth grade and continued through twelfth grade. During that time, I had many opportunities for my education to be enriched through creativity and volunteer ministries. I served as a volunteer with the Thurman Brisben Center, taught dance to preschool children, and volunteered with the Fredericksburg SPCA. My hobbies include drama, musical dance theater, classical ballet, and singing in a Christian vocal group. My next step in life includes earning a veterinary technician degree in order to fulfill my dream of working at a zoo or with an exotic animal vet.

Arnold, Rachel Renee

Jeffersonton, Virginia

I’ve been homeschooled my whole life, and I honestly wouldn’t change a thing about it. Being in a family of eight kids is crazy enough, but deciding to homeschool all of them is just crazy—but my mother was (and is) able to do it! It took me forever to decide what I wanted to do with my life after high school, and to be honest, some things are still in the air. I’m currently working at Starbucks, but I’m hoping to be moving out of my parents’ house and getting a place of my own, and after that I plan on becoming a police officer. Being homeschooled was one the best things that ever happened to me, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Homeschool Graduation | HEAV 3

Hockaday, Caleb Ryan

Fredericksburg, Virginia

Caleb is the first homeschooled graduate of the family. A voracious reader, he has created computer games, several comic book series, and an art portfolio. He enjoys kayaking and overnight camping on the river, and he volunteers with his church as groundskeeper. An appreciation of science and math has led to interests in forensic science and computer forensics. Dual-enrollment classes at Germanna Community College will have him completing his associate degree in cybersecurity within a year of graduation. We’re proud of the young man he has become, due in no small part to his homeschooling experience of five years.

Horton, Sydney Rae’Lee

New Kent, Virginia

I began homeschooling my sophomore year, and it was a challenging transition. I began to become more optimistic about homeschooling and began buckling down. I realized I had to be diligent in studying and in my classes. Homeschooling, I feel, has made me realize the importance of learning and let my abilities reflect in my daily life. After high school, I plan to become a pediatric registered nurse. I thank God and my family for the love and encouragement they’ve given throughout my years in school. Jeremiah 29:11 is a favorite verse of mine.

Michael Hubbard

Hubbard, Jr., Michael Javaughn

West Springfield, Virginia

The youngest child of three, and the only boy, Michael is treasured for his boundless energy, selflessness, positive attitude, kindness, humility, internal drive, superior work ethic, and integrity. He is consistently prized by leaders, teachers, professionals, business clients, and peers—be it at church (worship team and youth group), leading on mission (SALT Ministry), in club (Awana Citation Award recipient, Cub Scouts, Trail Life), at practice (piano, swim), in school (A+ student, Société Honoraire de Français), or at work. We pray for Michael’s continued blessing and success at University of Mount Union—where he will study business management with a minor in music on scholarship, and participate on the swim team.

Hutcheson, Jenae A.

Prince George, Virginia

I am a 17-year-old senior high schooler who has been homeschooled since the fourth grade. I also currently attend Powhatan School of Dental Assisting and will formally graduate after taking the state exam in May 2021. Being homeschooled has allowed me the opportunity to pursue avenues that included all the things I am passionate about. That list includes CPR, computer and sign language classes, all-star cheerleading, and becoming a head cheer coach for a recreational athletic association. My upbringing furnished me with unlimited field trips and travel to explore agriculture, natural resources, history, technology, and the arts through hands-on experiences and a hands-on way of learning. My hobbies include hip hop dancing, baking, traveling, and shopping, and I aspire to become an orthodontist. I have a special place in my heart to see people smile with confidence, and I love how those smiles reflect a person’s overall happiness. My parents, teachers, instructors, and teammates have all helped me become—and have shaped me into—a relevant, reliable, respectful individual who will be a success that they all can be immensely proud of.

I’ve been homeschooled by my parents my whole life, which is to be expected when your father is an attorney for HSLDA. My favorite subject in school is math, although it’s also the source of most of my frustration. I’m very interested in games and gaming. I love video games, particularly roguelike and role-playing games. I like playing board games as well. I’ve served as dungeon master for several Dungeons & Dragons campaigns for family, friends, online groups, and at my co-op. After high school, I’m going to college for math statistics or, more likely, video game design.

God has been ever faithful to me throughout my years in homeschool. I have been blessed with opportunities to explore, travel, and learn in ways that many others have not.
