Virginia homeschoolers have several way to show evidence of progress by August 1 of each year in order to comply with the Virginia homeschool law.

Providing Evidence of Progress

There are several ways for to show evidence of educational growth and progress. Parents may choose to put together a portfolio of their student’s work, have their child evaluated, or use some other form of evaluation that their local superintendent accepts.

Evaluation Options

Summary of § 22.1-254.1(C) of the Virginia Code states that “The parent who elects to provide home instruction shall provide the division superintendent by August 1 following the school year in which the child has received home instruction with either
(i) evidence that the child has attained a composite score in or above the fourth stanine (23rd percentile) on ANY nationally normed standardized achievement test or
(ii) an evaluation or assessment which the division superintendent determines indicates that the child is achieving an adequate level of educational growth and progress.” [Emphasis added]
