Urgent Action Required!

UN CRPD Hearing Scheduled

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is back. As of this writing, we’ve been told that the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is planning to hold a new hearing on the treaty on Tuesday, November 5.

The CRPD was defeated last year, and it can be done again–but only with your help. All 100 U.S. Senators, and especially the Senators on the Foreign Relations Committee, need to hear from you. Find out which senators are on the FRC here, and call your senator now!

Visit HSLDA’s action page here to learn more about the CRPD.

Convention News Mortenson

Great Things Are Coming!

If you haven’t marked June 5-7, 2014, on your calendar, do it now! We have many INSPIRING speakers we’ve never had before this year, and the workshop tracks are shaping up!
We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Terry Mortenson of Answers in Genesis–author, speaker, and creationist!
Like most people, Dr. Mortenson grew up in an educational system that taught evolution as fact, but during his first year at the University of Minnesota (where he majored in math), and shortly after becoming a Christian, he began to see the fallacy of the idea of millions of years of evolution. He has been studying and speaking on the creation-evolution issue since the late 1970s. Be sure to see him at the convention!

We’re moving the rest of the HEAV office today and would greatly appreciate some additional help. If you, or a strong teen you know, can help, please come by the office any time today. Questions, please give Jeff Miller a call at 757-869-5270.

Winners of the Gold Medal of Achievement

Congratulations to Tomi Olusina and Martin Royal RangersSimpkins Jr., who recently earned the pinnacle of Royal Rangers’ advancement–the Gold Medal of Achievement–at Outpost 187 (Faith Landmarks Ministries) in Richmond. The Royal Rangers, a Christian scouting program for boys, was proud to recognize these young men. Very similar to the Boy Scouts of America’s Eagle Scout Award, this prestigious award recognizes boys who have met all the requirements established by the Royal Ranger National Office: 7 core merits, 11 elective merits, present the plan of salvation, complete the GMA Capstone Project, and complete a GMA district Review Board process. You can learn about the Royal Rangers at http://royalrangers.ag.org.

In addition to his commitment to Royal Rangers, Tomi Olusina enjoys interacting with younger children and serves in the children’s ministry at his church, worked as a junior counselor in the church camp, and volunteered in the children’s program at the HEAV convention the past two years. Tomi plans on continuing his service at FLM children’s ministry and the convention for years to come.

Homeschooled all his life, Martin Simpkins received a four-year Air Force ROTC scholarship and is attending Piedmont Community College. He plans to attend the University of Virginia to pursue a degree in computer science. Currently, he is part of the UVA Air Force ROTC detachment and looks forward to serving his God and country as an Air Force officer.

Transcript Editor Volunteer Help Wanted!

Do you love editing and reveling in details? Did you love creating your child’s high school transcript and maybe helping other moms who were unsure of what to do? If so, you may be HEAV’s new transcript editor!

HEAV is looking for a volunteer willing to spend approximately three to six hours a week managing and editing transcript submissions. Work can be done from home and experience is not necessary (you will be trained to use the computer program), but the following skills are essential: accurate typing, organization, attention to detail, and a familiarity with high school course titles. A small stipend is provided. If interested, please contact Diana Un at office@heav.org.

Field Trip Hostess

Like to be out and about, meeting new people? Enjoy hands-on learning with your children? We may have the perfect volunteer position for you!

HEAV is looking for field trip hostesses to set-up and man the HEAV table at Homeschool Day events. You would greet homeschoolers as they arrive, answer homeschool questions, and display free HEAV information. In exchange for manning the HEAV table for 3-4 hours in the morning, you and your family can visit the museum or park free of charge for the rest of the day.

If this sounds like a good fit for you and your family, please contact Yvonne Bunn at support@heav.org. Please be sure to include your phone number.
