HEAV’S Virginia Homeschool Update

October 23, 2013

Convention News

Favorite convention speakers, Rick and Marilyn Boyer of Character Concepts/The Learning Parent, will be back this year! Parents of 14, they share homeschooling wisdom–based on more than thirty years’ experience–that will touch your heart and mind.

Marilyn’s heartfelt speaking style is both challenging and comforting, and her many years in the trenches have convinced her that the most important part of an education is the building of godly character. That’s why she created Character Concepts, a Bible-based curriculum for kids from preschool through high school.

To homeschooling parents, Rick is an author, speaker, and homeschool pioneer who speaks from more than thirty years of experience. To homeschooled kids, he is “Uncle Rick,” whose audio recordings take Scripture, history, and adventure stories and turn them into delightful and life-changing character lessons. Rick presents biblical truth with homespun wisdom and side-splitting humor, along with (sometimes) period costumes to make his live presentations even more fascinating.

Be sure attend their workshops at the convention in June, and don’t miss them in the Exhibit Hall, where “Uncle Rick” will be reading aloud–dressed in costume–stories of the Revolution and World War II.

Homeschool Graduate Sworn In

Congratulations to former homeschooler, Matthew Clark. On October 7, he was sworn in as an attorney to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Matt, an Associate Counsel with the American Center for Law and Justice, was previously a Judicial Law Clerk for the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Virginia.

Matt was homeschooled by parents Bob and Debbie Clark, now of Chesterfield County. His wife, Megan, was also homeschooled in Henrico by her parents Payton and Robyn Wilson. Matt and Megan have three boys of their own now.

Homeschool Student Speaks at Conference

Congratulations to Lindsey Narmour, the first student to speak at the Roanoke Regional Writers Conference. She was homeschooled K-12th and now is a Junior English major at Hollins University. Most of the speakers at the January conference are either professors of English or very established authors, so being the first student ever to be invited to speak is quite an honor.

Voting for School Board Members

Q. In my district, some school board members are on the ballot. Is voting for local school board members important for homeschoolers since we are not in the public school system?

From our Blog

4) Parting Thought – Dear Lord…

Dear Lord,

Help me to live this day quietly, easily;

To lean upon Thy great strength trustfully, restfully;

To meet others peacefully, joyously;

To face tomorrow confidently, courageously.

5) Worth Repeating Charlotte Mason

“Education is part and parcel of religion and every enthusiastic teacher knows that he is obeying the precept,–‘feed my lambs’–feed with all those things which are good and wholesome for the spirit of a man; and, before all and including all, with the knowledge of God.”

– Charlotte Mason (1842-1923), British educator who worked to help parents better rear and teach their children.
