Richmond – Thursday, August 28, 2014

Teaching high school at home can seem like a daunting task–but the benefits of homeschooling during the high school years far outweigh the challenges! Having graduated three homeschooled high schoolers and dealt regularly with college admissions officers through her work with HEAV, speaker Yvonne Bunn will clarify important high school issues and share practical ways to implement an effective high school program.

Raising Kids to Do Hard Things with Gregg Harris

Gregg Harris, the father of Josh Harris, author of I Kissed Dating Goodbye, and Alex & Brett Harris, co-authors of Do Hard Things, provides information to help your kids think beyond the school-work-play track so they can jump off the conveyor belts of modern-day education and employment, and into a world of freedom and opportunity! Help them catch the vision, set goals, and make step-by-step changes to raise their expectations of themselves and take on hard things. Kids don’t need to wait until they’re older to do truly great things–they can do them now!

Article of the Week

Three Tips for a Smooth Back-to-School Transition – Carlie Kercheval

We hope you have already laid out clear goals and deadlines, but take time to do so if you have not. Once you’ve completed that, the writer of this article (a military homeschooling mom) suggests you pray about those goals. Can you arrange to do that as a husband and wife if at all possible? Finally, be sure to share the direction you have in mind for the coming year with your children!

4) Parting Thought – Gao Zhisheng Released from Chinese Prison

Christian human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng was released from a Chinese prison on August 7, 2014. What does this have to do with homeschooling? Nothing–except it should remind us that some people believe so much in their rights as men created in the image of God that they wind up in terrible circumstances. Gao Zhisheng defended Chinese Christians and protested the One Child policy. Let this remind you to pray for the persecuted Christians in all areas of the world. Pray for our own imperiled freedoms. And appreciate what you do have.

As the Lord brings him to mind, pray for brother Gao who has suffered serious health damage during his imprisonment. Read more in the article or search online for more about him. Look for groups who minister to such believers, educate yourself, and find a way to help. Teaching your children about this reality at a time when they are able to process the information is a great contribution. Teach them to pray.

5) Worth Repeating

“Let us tenderly and kindly cherish, therefore, the means of knowledge. Let us dare to read, think, speak, and write.”

– John Adams (1735-1826), lawyer, statesman, American Founding Father, second President of the United States, and homeschool dad!

6) Verse of the Week

Yet the Lord will command his lovingkindness in the day time, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
