Biblical Encouragement for the Special Needs Parent by Peggy Ployhar ~ E-10

Special-Needs Conference Keynote

Speaking towards the scripture, “Train up a child in the way he should go…”, Peggy digs into the Bible to show parents how to live up to this standard without losing their focus—or their minds. From the experience of being a parent and a foster parent of multiple special needs children, Peggy Ployhar has first-hand knowledge of the rigorous demands put on parents who are raising, training, and homeschooling children with special needs. Woven with personal stories, biblical truth, and lots of encouragement, this talk will truly speak to the hearts of parents who want to raise their special needs children as God has called them to do. And even though these don’t say “special needs,” she addresses many ways to make homeschooling fit your specific needs.

Fortified for Launch ~ Abraham Hamilton E-11 A/B

God describes children as arrows placed into the quiver of a mighty warrior. That simile is employed intentionally to describe the reality that the arrows were deposited ultimately to be launched. In order for the arrows to hit the designated target, they must be skillfully provided with trajectory and direction. Unfortunately, in many instances arrows have been subsumed into the prevalent surrounding culture, resulting in their failing to hit the mark. An indispensable ingredient to precision launching is passionate cultivation in, and adherence to, peculiarity.

Special-Needs Conference

As schools have made reading their new god, believing that producing good readers will solve all their academic problems, many children—the dyslexic, the easily distracted, the auditorily challenged—are truly left behind in the rush to improve test scores. What schools don’t know (but what many parents discover) is that reading is not simply being able to rapidly decode symbols with the eyes. With humor and insight, Andrew will share stories and strategies for helping students who need to engage the cognitive processes of reading, but who are more likely to excel through a wider variety of practical, creative, and imaginative approaches.

Flipping Special Education Homeschooling ~ Peggy Ployhar B-15 C

Special Needs Conference

Just as a house in shambles needs to be flipped to renew its purpose and extend its use, the typical methods for teaching special needs students in the homeschooling environment need flippin, if parents want to see better educational results for their students than the typical model provides. In this talk, Peggy Ployhar dives into the history of the special education system and the basis for many of the current practices of teaching students with special needs—and how they have affected our preconceived notions on how to best teach a student with special needs. But then, with a twist of hope, she also shares how parents can take advantage of their homeschooling freedoms to flip these practices and homeschool their special needs students with renewed purpose to pursue their students’ God-given gifts and talents.

What Are Executive Functioning Skills? ~ Sarah Collins B-17

Special Needs Conference

Executive functioning skills are defined as the “brain-based skills needed to effectively execute or perform tasks and solve problems.” As with most skills, there is a range—not everyone needs to complete the same tasks on a daily basis. But, there must be a match between the environment, expectations, and abilities of a person. This class will 1) define executive functional skills, 2) explain why they can be hard for some people, and 3) give helpful solutions to use in the homeschool to help your children build these skills.

Weaving science with stories of hope and a fun brain-training demonstration, Dr. Amy will ensure attendees leave with a better understanding of what to look for in reading instruction and how brain-strengthening exercises can improve reading skills.

Getting Kids to Work ~ Hal & Melanie E-11 C

People complain all the time that their children are lazy and unmotivated, but only 28% of American families give their children any chores at all. At all. With eight bedrest pregnancies and then a full-time ministry and business, we had to get the kids on board or drown. Come get practical strategies for teaching your children to be diligent—to get their schoolwork done, to do chores, to take initiative, and to be confident in their abilities—at all ages. How a Biblical Worldview Is Critical Thinking ~ Dr. Renton Rathbun, E-11

Some view the biblical worldview as a nice addition to a curriculum if there is extra time. This fundamental misunderstanding of the shaping of a biblical worldview stems from the idea that critical thinking is possible without biblical worldview shaping. Because of the demands and scope of critical thinking as a discipline, biblical worldview is absolutely inherent in providing real critical thinking skills.

Yes, Math Is Classical, Too! Memoria Press ~ B-19

Mathematical mastery was a prerequisite for entry into Plato’s Academy to study the intricacies of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. Today, unfortunately, much mathematical study has been relegated to subjectivism or cornered off as a means to specialized ends in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S.T.E.M.). Computational proficiency has trumped conceptual mastery and cohesion, and students are unable to articulate the connection between their mathematical study and the other disciplines of classical education. A return to the integration of mathematics with the classical liberal arts is in order, a return that recognizes mathematics as an essential language by which we can understand, describe, and model the created world. We can pursue this end through arithmetic mastery in the grammar years, a more deliberate, conceptual approach to the disciplines of algebra, geometry, and calculus, and a consistent emphasis on the nature of creation as the necessary gateway to our growth in wisdom. As the language of science and a more concrete expression of abstract logical reasoning, mathematics is classical, too.
