An HEAV Sponsored Event
The Virginia Military Institute maintains the 300-acre New Market Battlefield State Historical Park where the Battle of New Market was fought on May 15, 1864. A total of 257 VMI Cadets, the youngest only 15 years old, fought on the grounds and tragically saw five killed and more than 40 wounded that day.
The site today also features the historic Bushong Farm and the large Virginia Museum of the Civil War with its Emmy-winning film, Field of Lost Shoes, and extensive galleries. Bring your students and have fun for the day and make memories for a lifetime!
“This is one of the largest historical living history events for homeschool students in the state,” commented Major Troy Marshall, site director. This year, the Virginia Museum of the Civil War will staff the park with more than 30 volunteers and living historians, turning the 300-acre site into a hands-on learning center. Visitors are invited to
- Join the Confederate Army and learn to drill,
- Dance the Virginia Reel,
- Try 19th-century games and crafts,
- Watch the Emmy-award winning film Field of Lost Shoes, and
- Learn about historic food customs.
join a Civil War army and learn to drill, try dancing the Virginia Reel, enjoy 19th-century games and crafts, take a guided tour through battlefield, learn about historic food ways, and much more. There will also be displays by area non-profit and state agency groups educating attendees about the rich historical and unique natural resources found in our area.
The event activities are both inside of the museum and outside at the farm and battlefield grounds. Participants should dress accordingly for spring in the Shenandoah Valley, where the temperature averages between 40-60 degrees.
