Understand the difference between a non-renewable and a renewable resource in order to help us think about where our consumer goods and energy come from in order to make better choices for a more sustainable future.
February 23, 2022: Follow the Drinking Gourd: A Quest for Freedom
1 to 1:45 p.m.
All ages (recommended for grades 2-5)
Engage in an exploration of how enslaved people in the Southern U.S. used the song “Follow the Drinking Gourd” to find their way north to freedom. Includes a retelling of the classic children’s book by Jeanette Winter.
March 9, 2022: Habitats and Humans
1 to 1:45 p.m
Learn how the choices we make can impact our local habitats. Find out what we can do to help maintain healthy habitats to benefit plants, animals, and humans too.
March 23, 2022: Legends of the Night Sky: Orion
Two young kids explore the sky with their mom, learning how to find shapes in the night sky, and then hear a retelling of the classic Greek myth of Orion the Hunter.
April 13, 2022: Flowing Energy
1 p.m. to 1:45
Explore the way energy flows through an ecosystem. Through this journey, learn the importance of the relationship between producers and consumers and what the role we play in the food web.
April 27, 2022: Virginia Skies
This is a live guided tour of the current evening sky with a staff astronomer. Come prepared with your questions to find out more about the night sky and the things we can see in it.
May 11, 2022: All About Animals
1 to 1:45 p.m.
Explore what characteristics are unique to different animal groups in this station based program. Examine how these differences help each animal acquire their basic needs to survive.
May 25, 2022: InnerSpace
All ages (recommended for grades 5 and up)
Discover an exploration of the “inner space” of the human body and how it responds to and fights off diseases.

Register online or call the reservations office at 757-595-9135 or send an email to Reservations@thevlm.org. The Reservations Office hours are 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday. Please register everyone who plans to attend.
- Everyone attending must register in one registration. Class price includes Museum admission.
- Additional times and dates may be added as class space fills so please register early if you intend to join in on the fun.
- Everyone is required to wear a mask for all classroom programs.

Driving Directions: From I-64 Exit 258A Newport News, go two miles and turn left at the traffic light opposite the fire station. It is about 30 minutes from Williamsburg and Norfolk.
