1. Germanna Community College Science & Engineering Day – Fredericksburg – April 6

Germanna Community College, Fredericksburg Campus

Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost: This is a free event, geared toward students in kindergarten through grade eight.

Featured activities will include “The Science Behind Seeing: Mirrors, Lenses, and Lasers,” drone demonstrations, geology rocks, anatomy and physiology room, microscope room, campus tours, and more.

2. 154th Surrender Anniversary Events – Appomattox – April 8-14

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park
Appomattox, Virginia

Monday, April 8 through Sunday, April 14, 2019. This is a free event, open to the public; some specific activities may require a fee.

Appomattox Court House National Historical Park will commemorate the 154th anniversary of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant with special anniversary related programs and activities.

Traditional highlights will include the reenacted Stacking of Arms Ceremony on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, several new ranger-led programs, and the luminary event Saturday night, April 13, in which 4,600 luminaries representing each person in Appomattox County who was emancipated as a result of the surrender will line the Stage Road.

New for this year is the one-act play Appomattox: The Last 48 Hours. The play is free to attend and will be performed on April 13 at 6 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets.

The Appomattox 1865 Foundation will also host a Civil War ball at the Appomattox Inn & Suites on Friday, April 12 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The cost for this event is $20 at the door or $15 with advance registration. Civil War era or evening attire is requested, but not required. Refreshments will be provided, with a cash bar available in the lobby.

3. Classical Conversations Parents’ Practicum – Richmond – July 8-10

West End Presbyterian Church
Richmond, Virginia

Monday, July 8 through Wednesday, July 10, 2019, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost: This is a free parents’ conference on classical Christian homeschooling. Student day camps available for children up to 14 years old; $49/student.

Examine the roots and reasons for the classical Christian model of education, improve your grasp on the tools of learning, and share some fellowship with like-minded parents. This year’s theme is “Returning to Roots and Reason: The Art of Arithmetic.” Find out how to study math in a whole new way, with your whole family.
