Historic Point of Rocks Park
Saturday, June 23, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Cost: This is a free event, open to the public. Parking is available on-site. Food and drink will be available for purchase.
This special event will focus on the Civil War medical story, with living history encampments, artillery demonstrations, cannon and rifle musket demonstrations, period mourning display, medical display, period music, and guided walking tours of the site.
The site was established as a Union field hospital in 1864, which further developed into a large complex that could hold more than 3,000 patients at a time. The patients were under the care of two women pioneers in the field of medicine: Clara Barton, founder of the
American Red Cross, and Harriet P. Dame.
A commemorative marker dedication ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. to honor the
soldiers buried on the property during the 1864 Bermuda Hundred Campaign. Point of Rocks
was the original burial ground for 43 Confederate and 1,294 Union soldiers who died there.
