Friday, May 11, 2018, from 10 a.m. to noon. Cost: $5/child, ages six and older. No fee for accompanying adults. Preregistration is required, but will remain open until all available spaces are filled.

This program addresses life of the Civil War soldier, causes of the war, hardships soldiers faced, rations, equipment, clothing, pastimes, and how soldiers fought. Learn about important battles during the Bermuda Hundred Campaign fought in Chesterfield County in 1864.

2. Home Educators of America Conference and Used Curriculum Sale – Purcellville – May 17-19

Thursday, May 17 through Saturday, May 19, 2018. Cost: This is a free event, open to the public, but pre-registration is recommended. Childcare is available for Thursday for an additional cost. Sign-up is required in order to sell books and curriculum.

3. Scientific Spelling Workshop – Arlington – May 19

Saturday, May 19, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost: $23/person. Pre-registration required.

Investigate spelling scientifically through semantics, morphology, etymology, and phonology, and learn how to help your student make sense of English spelling. Dr. Jennifer Petrich and Scott Mills will co-present on the neuroscience behind reading struggles and how the systematic and ordered nature of the English writing system can help all students achieve.

4. Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia 2018 Summer Camps – Chesterfield – Multiple Dates Beginning July 9

The Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia will partner with the Chesterfield County Department of Parks and Recreation to offer a variety of summer day camps, including Diggin’ in History Archaeology Camp, Heritage Crafts and Games Camp, and Grandparent and Grandchild Summer Camp.

Cost for all camps is $100/person. Multiple camp sessions will be held in July and August. Pre-registration is required and can be done on the website. Information sheets for each camp, camp release forms, and the code of behavior can also be found on the website.

5. Fork Union Military Academy Summer Camps – Fork Union – Multiple Dates Beginning June 15

Fork Union Military Academy will offer a variety of summer sports camps including Basketball School; Football, Strength, and Speed Camp; Father-Son Weekend; and Mark Bernardino’s Swim Camp.

Multiple camp sessions will be held in June and July. Pre-registration is required; space is limited. Cost varies per camp.

6. Center for Legal and Court Technology Classes – Williamsburg – Multiple Classes, Beginning June 28

Williamsburg, Virginia

The Center for Legal and Court Technology will offer several week-long introductory classes geared toward high school students in a program held in conjunction with the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William and Mary School of Education. Classes offered include Introduction to U.S. Law, Introduction to Torts, Introduction to Evidence, and Introduction to Search & Seizure.

Class fees begin at $190/student and include required textbook. Students under 14 years of age must have permission of the program director to attend. Casual attire is appropriate, but temperatures in classrooms can vary significantly so it is recommended that students dress in layers.
