The Chesterfield County Public Library celebrates the Bon Air Victorian era with a week of events that will showcase the Chesterfield community in the late 1800s. This family-friendly event will include theatrical and musical performances, crafts, games, stories, and more. 2. Gaithersburg Book Festival – Gaithersburg, MD – May 19

Saturday, May 19, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Cost: This is a free, family event.

The Gaithersburg Book Festival is an annual celebration of great books and great writing. The festival will feature best-selling and award-winning authors who will participate in talks, panel discussions, and book signings throughout the day. Authors will include John Feinstein, Alice McDermott, Robert Sabuda, Dan Santat, Mark Bittman, Gayle Forman, Ted Bell, Denise Fleming, and more. Parents should review selections to ensure they are appropriate for their family.

Other festival highlights include exhibiting authors, a Children’s Village, literary exhibitors, live entertainment, used and new book sales, and free interactive, hands-on writing workshops on a variety of topics for adults/teens and children.

Admission, parking, and accessible shuttle buses from Shady Grove Metro Station and Lakeforest Mall are free.

 

3. Superhero Night at the Lab – Fairfax – May 19

Fairfax, Virginia

Saturday, May 19, 2018, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost: $13/person, children 2 years and younger are free; $10/person for members. Preregistration is required.

Come dressed as your favorite superhero for an evening of superhero science. In addition to exploring the lab, activities such as Villain Quest, Cobweb Slime, Superhero Genetics, and Super Coding will be available.

4. HERE Homeschool Expo and Used Curriculum Sale – Newport News – May 29

Menchville Baptist Church
Newport News, Virginia

Tuesday, May 29, 2018, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Cost: This is a free event, open to the public. Tables are free for used curriculum sellers and organization representatives, but pre-registration is required to reserve a table.

Home Educators Recreation and Enrichment (HERE) Group is hosting its annual homeschool expo and used curriculum sale. Anyone can sell and purchase homeschool curriculum, and representatives of area homeschool cooperatives and other organizations such as sports teams, libraries with story times or other homeschool events, museums with homeschool days, and more are welcome to share information about what they offer to the homeschooling community.
