2.1 Appomattox Courthouse National Historical Park “Healthy Parks, Healthy People” October Events – Appomattox – Various Dates

Cost: All events are free and open to the public. Participants should wear appropriate athletic shoes and outerwear, and bring a water bottle.

A dog walk of approximately two miles will take place on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at 10 a.m. Meet at the Lee’s Headquarters pull-off for a fall-time walk through the park. All dogs must be on a leash.

A birding walk of approximately two miles will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at 9 a.m. Join park staff at the Appomattox Wayside parking area. This walk will offer opportunities to find birds in a grassy field; see and hear a variety of local species in their natural habitat. Novices to experienced birders are welcome. Participants should bring their own binoculars if available.

The Healthy Parks Healthy People partnership is composed of seven area parks including Appomattox Court House NHP, Bear Creek Lake State Park, High Bridge Trail State Park, Holliday Lake State Park, James River State Park, Sailor’s Creek Battlefield Historical State Park, and Twin Lakes State Park. 2.2 “Strong Men and Women in Virginia History” Student Writing Contest – Submission Deadline Is November 10

High school students in Virginia are invited to honor outstanding African Americans by participating in Dominion Resources’ and the Library of Virginia’s “Strong Men and Women in Virginia History” student writing contest. Four winning essays will be chosen, one from each of the four regions in Virginia. Winning students will receive an Apple MacBook Air and $1000 for their schools.

Essays must be original works that have not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. Essays should not exceed 400 words. Entries must be submitted electronically by midnight on Friday, November 10, 2017. Winners will be notified by December 14, 2017, and an awards ceremony will be held on February 7, 2018 in Richmond, Virginia.
