Convention 2013 Is Coming!

It’s HEAV’s 30th anniversary, and we are working to bring you an extra-incredible lineup of speakers.

Look for many of last year’s exciting new features! Hands-on science demonstrations in the Exhibit Hall, historical reenactors, an instrument petting zoo, larger aisles, and well-placed seating areas, are just a few of the elements we’re working to include. And, of course, the Used Curriculum Sale, Children’s Program, Graduation, and fabulous workshops will definitely be back!

Homeschool Success Seminar

High School at Home: Path to Success!

Midlothian, October 9, 2012     Yvonne Bunn, Director of Homeschool Support

FREE!

Teaching high school at home can seem like a daunting task–but the benefits of homeschooling during the high school years far outweigh the challenges!

Do you wonder what subjects to include during the high school years? How to teach higher level courses like chemistry labs or calculus? How to develop a transcript, assign credits, and compute a GPA?!? Are you ready for AP courses, PSATs, SATs, and ACTs? And what about sports and extracurricular activities? Yes, it’s a whole new world!

In this seminar, Yvonne Bunn, director of homeschool support for Home Educators Association of Virginia, will cover these topics and more. Having graduated three homeschooled high schoolers and dealt regularly with college admissions officers through her work with HEAV, Yvonne will clarify important high school questions and share practical ways to implement an effective high school program. Whether your student plans to go to college, join the military, or enter the workforce, this seminar will help you develop a well-planned high school course of study. You’ll learn where to get help, how to schedule important testing, and how to develop an acceptable transcript. You’ll leave this seminar with confidence to move forward and tools to develop a high school plan that will work for your student.

4) Parting Thought – It Depends on Your Perspective

The armies of Israel looked at the giant Goliath through the eyes of man and

said, “He’s too big to beat.”

David looked at him through the eyes of God and said, “He’s too big to miss.”

5) Worth Repeating  “I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish small tasks as if they were great and noble.”  - Helen Keller (1880-1968), American author and lecturer. Though blind and deaf as a result of a severe childhood illness, Helen was patiently tutored by a very special teacher, Miss Anne Sullivan, who taught Helen to fingerspell and communicate. Miss Keller eventually also learned to speak (though it was difficult to understand her). She earned a degree from Radcliffe College–the first deaf and blind person to earn such a degree. See the house where Helen grew up on its website.

6) Verse of the Week
My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

- Proverbs 2:1-5 (KJV)
