HEAV’S Virginia Homeschool Update

12 Years Ago Today

Commemorating Patriot DayWorld Trade Center

A cloudless, strikingly blue sky; the first hint of crisp air just around the corner. September 11, 2001–a day we can never forget. Yet, this year’s graduates were mere preschoolers on that fateful day–barely old enough to remember–and many of us are teaching children who had yet to born. For them, truly, September 11 is relegated to the “history” of America, though they live in a world forever changed.

As homeschoolers, we have a great opportunity to present lessons in history to our children. Eclectic Homeschoolers has put together a page of Patriot Day resources to help you teach your students to better understand the event, its precursors, and its aftermath. Please take some time today and pray with your children–for those who lost loved ones on that day, and for those who have served in the military actions that followed.

Save the Date!

Home Education: A Hope and A Future

Voddie Baucham Mark your calendar for the 31st Annual Virginia Homeschool Convention–June 5, 6, and 7, 2014! Keynote speaker Voddie Baucham is a husband, father, pastor, author, professor, conference speaker, and church planter. Currently serving as the Pastor of Preaching at Grace Family Baptist Church in Spring, Texas, Voddie’s journey to faith was a very unusual and intellectual one (he never heard the gospel until he was in college)–so he understands what it means to be a skeptic, and knows what it’s like to try to figure out the Christian life without relying on the traditions of men. As a result, he speaks to ‘outsiders’ in ways few Bible teachers can. Read more about his ministry here: http://www.gracefamilybaptist.net/voddie-baucham-ministries/

And of course–there will be an amazing display of homeschool support materials and resources in the huge exhibit hall, with hands-on demos, more than 140 workshops, the young entrepreneurs area, the humongous used curriculum sale, graduation, chess championships, and more.

Article of the Week

Raising Children with One Heart and One Mind – Darlene Schacht

Mrs. Schacht reminds us of that powerful tongue and its role in keeping peace and unity. When we have self-control, we can hold our tongues as Scripture instructs, and Mom and Dad can better present a unified team in the home.

4) Parting Thought – Can You Pass This Test?

You may have seen eighth grade exams purporting to be from late 19th- or early 20th-century schools, but there were questions about their authenticity. Here is one from 1912 and another from 1931 in photocopy form that may be more reliable. See how you do on the questions and challenge other adults or older students to attempt them. Homeschooling truly is a chance for parents to learn what they missed previously! Do you display enthusiasm about learning?

5) Worth Repeating

“The enjoyment of God…is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied. To go to Heaven, fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here. Better than fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, or children, or the company of any, or all earthly friends. These are but shadows; but the enjoyment of God is the substance. These are but scattered beams; but God is the sun. These are but streams; but God is the fountain. These are but drops, but God is the ocean.”

- Jonathan Edwards(1703-1758), Puritan theologian, preacher, and author. This reflection on God and our earthly families is certainly one to call to mind when daily pressures seem too much–we can look forward to relief!
