| Senate Vote on CRPD Tomorrow
Urgent Action Needed
![]() Senator John Kerry plans to pass the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities before July 26. It is urgent that you call both Senators Jim Webb and Mark Warner in Washington, DC, at 202-224-3121 and at their local offices. Ask them to oppose the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. There will be a formal committee vote tomorrow–Thursday, July 19.
This is an unprecedented attempt to ratify the CRPD without any serious consideration. Michael Farris stated,
“This is a radical attempt to take away parental rights. Make no mistake–if they succeed at ratifying this treaty, the Convention on the Rights of the Child is next. This is not a battle just for parents with disabled and special needs children. This is a battle for every parent.”

Sports Access Meetings Scheduled
![]() The Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) has formed a study group to discuss homeschool participation in interscholastic sports. The study group will hold a series of meetings open to the public. Parents and students who are interested in sports access are welcome to comment. The meeting schedule follows:
Because of heated debates during the 2012 General Assembly session and the likely introduction of a similar sports access bill by Delegate Rob Bell (R-Charlottesville) in 2013, the VSBA president “recognizes that various stakeholders could benefit from a discussion of the issues and concerns related to homeschooled students participating in athletics. Such issues include, but are not limited to, residency, insurance, and pay-for-play requirements. The ultimate concern is a loss of local control by school boards.” [VSBA emphasis.]
Other participants will include the Virginia High School League (VHSL), the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS), and the Virginia Parent Teacher Association (VAPTA). If you have any questions, please contact Yvonne Bunn, HEAV’s director of government affairs at legislative@heav.org.

~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ 4) Parting Thought – Life is Like That Sometimes “I ventured into a local bakery, carefully examining all the rich looking pastries displayed on trays in the glass cases. A clerk approached me and asked, “What would you like?” So I answered, “I’d like that chocolate covered donut with sprinkles, a Bavarian cream-filled Bismarck, a raspberry jelly donut, two raised-glazed, and that cheese frosted Danish.” The clerk smiled and slid back the door to begin retrieving items, then stopped as I let out a small sigh and added, “But instead I’ll take an oat-bran muffin.” [And no, I don't find this story very funny, either]”

~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ 5) Worth Repeating “What is all too easily lost in traditional education is the overall purpose and plan of God, and the progress of his plan through the ages. Also overlooked, or at least minimized, are such things as the global church, world religions, the impact of culture, and so on.” -David Hesselgrave. Professor Emeritus of Mission, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. The school’s 2011-2012 catalog says, “Dr. Hesselgrave has extensive experience as both a pastor and missionary. He spent twelve years as a missionary in Japan. Before joining the faculty at Trinity, he taught at the Evangelical Free Church Bible Institute of Japan and at the University of Minnesota. He is a past president of the Association of Evangelical Professors of Missions and is executive director of the Evangelical Missiology Society. He has written several books, including Communicating Christ Cross-Culturally, Planting Churches Cross-Culturally, and Counseling Cross-Culturally.
~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them! [If] I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. - Psalms 139:17-18 (KJV)
