HOMESCHOOL DAY EVENTS AND SUCCESS SEMINARS

Thursday, January 31, 2013 – Portsmouth

An HEAV-Sponsored Event!

One price for BOTH museums! Homeschoolers of all ages will love to visit the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum and the Children’s Museum of Virginia for Homeschool Day. Younger children may play on the fire truck and go bonkers for bubbles at the Children’s Museum while older kids will be inspired by Virginia’s incredible sports history and hit the basketball court and other interactive play areas at the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame & Museum.

Swan Lake at the Richmond Ballet

An HEAV-Sponsored Event!

Friday, February 8; Saturday, February 9; and Sunday, February 10, 2013 – Richmond

For many, Swan Lake defines the very art of ballet: the lush Tchaikovsky score, the moonlit images of impossible grace, and the story of mystery and transformation. There will be just four performances of this time-honored classic. Use the HEAV code to get discount prices on tickets. Swan Lake is performed in the Carpenter Theatre at Richmond CenterStage, and will run approximately two and a half hours; dress comfortably.

An HEAV-Sponsored Event!

The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier

February 15 and February 22 – Petersburg

Jump right into history as park educators deliver informative programs using fun, participatory learning techniques. In programs specifically designed for children in grades 3 through 12, students will participate in a military drill, study how free and enslaved Virginia families lived 150 years ago, and come face-to-face with the experiences of Civil War soldiers!

IndoctriNation

Special Bonus for Convention-Goers

Not One, But Two, Free Feature Films
Advent’s 2013 film, Hero

–a powerful depiction of God’s desire to “turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers”–uses baseball as an engaging backdrop and will be shown at the convention. Q&A to follow.

IndoctriNation, the feature-length documentary that explores one of the most important and controversial issues in the history of mankind–the issue of education–will be shown again this year followed by a Q&A with Colin Gunn. Don’t miss this one!

CONVENTION HELP NEEDEDHelp Wanted!

Volunteers Needed

Are you a closet web surfer looking for something to do after the kids are in bed? HEAV needs volunteers to help search out and post on community calendars and media outlets about the upcoming convention. We’ll provide you ready-made descriptions, so no experience is necessary, just a willingness to serve.

Not tech-savvy? That’s okay–we also need help getting the word out the old-fashioned way. Phone volunteers are needed to call local churches, community groups, and radio stations. If you like to talk on the phone, this may be the job for you!

Help spread the word–and earn your early-UCS ticket–right from your own home!

If interested in either of these positions, please contact Maureen Bittner at publications@heav.org.

ARTICLES & INFORMATION

Article of the Week

Don’t Be So Hard on Yourself – Robin

The writer reminds us that, “Knowing who we are in Christ (forgiven, righteous)” and knowing that He is with us and still willing to forgive us should help to strengthen us for the tasks He has set before us. Go in His peace and don’t be so hard on yourself [or those near you].

Homeschool Q&A

Q. What can I expect to happen when I call my senator or delegate regarding a bill that affects homeschoolers? I want to call, but I’m not sure what to say.

4) Parting Thought – Rules of Grammar–Or Not

Don’t use too many quotations. As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “I hate quotations. Tell me what you know.”

Use words correctly, irregardless of how others use them.

Even IF a mixed metaphor sings, it should be derailed.

Exaggeration is a billion times worse than understatement.

What about the use of one-word sentences? Eliminate.

5) Worth Repeating

“Yesterday is a memory, tomorrow is a dream, and only today is a reality…so make it count for eternity.”

 - Ray Comfort (1949-present), evangelist, author, speaker, founder, and head of Living Waters Publications and The Way of the Master.

Ascribe to the Lord, O families of the peoples, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name.
