Do you long to make a difference in the lives of thousands of other homeschoolers? Do you or your children desire the opportunity to utilize skills and gain experience for the “real world”?
At HEAV, you and your children can accomplish all of these things and help the homeschool community in a big way! A lot of the work at HEAV is done by volunteers—busy families just like yours who see a need and get involved! HEAV volunteers are an integral part of making a difference for homeschoolers in our state.
We’ve Made It Easy!
Whether you are interested in helping year round or just once a year for a few hours at convention, you can make a difference at HEAV. Simply fill out our new Volunteer Checklist, and someone will contact you with more information. Take some time out of your busy schedule to volunteer with HEAV, and be blessed in the process!
Do you have a few hours to donate each week? Or perhaps you have a mature teen looking for some office experience? HEAV needs volunteers to help one or more days a week, or for a few hours at a time, in our Richmond office. Gain experience answering office phones, processing orders, assembling packets for shipping, and working on other special projects. Volunteer today!
Spread the word about HEAV to others in your neighborhood! We need volunteers to help us distribute magazines, convention brochures, and information. Volunteer today!
Don’t let transportation challenges, limited time, or a physical disability hold you back. At HEAV, you can volunteer virtually! If you have computer access and the necessary skills, HEAV is now offering the opportunity for you to do volunteer work over the Internet. This virtual volunteer service might include entering data, proofreading, laying out web pages, helping with publicity, or assisting with a number of other tasks. If you are comfortable on the computer and want to bless the homeschool community with your skills, virtual volunteering may be a perfect fit for you. Volunteer today!
We often have tasks that are best accomplished by teams of volunteers. If you have a group of homeschoolers who would like to volunteer together and work on a project, please let us know. Volunteer today!
HEAV handles a lot of special projects throughout the year, such as Box Tops for Education, Food Lion Shop and
Share, and the Ukrops’ Golden Gift Certificate programs. We need people who will be
responsible for each of these programs and who will work to increase
homeschooler and community participation. Volunteer today!

We could use your help at the convention! Please click here for more information about volunteering at the convention.
We also need help getting ready for the convention! We’re currently looking for office volunteers, a convention public relations coordinator, and a convention facilitator (see descriptions below).
Due to the increased convention workload, the HEAV Richmond office could use volunteers to come in one day a week (any day M-F) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help answer phone calls and assist with convention registration and other office duties. The need is from now until the convention. This is a great opportunity for a responsible teenager or young adult to get office experience. Volunteer moms will also be greatly appreciated. If you would be willing to help out in this way, please contact Carol Clark at office@heav.org or 804-278-9200.
Every speaker needs a good host or hostess. Help your favorite speaker feel at home by assisting them before, during, and after their workshop. All you need is the ability to make sure the speakers have what they need (you tell us if they don't), hand out evaluation forms, read a brief introduction, and count the number of people in your room. It's that simple. Please e-mail speakerhost@heav.org if you'd like to volunteer and we'll send you a list of available workshops!
The Distribution Coordinator will be responsible for working with the office administrator in the HEAV office each quarter to allocate the magazines to each local distributor. He or she will also be responsible for communicating with the distributors as necessary.
This is a team of people who will help distribute the HEAV magazine throughout the state. They are responsible for delivering The Virginia Home Educator magazine to doctor's offices, libraries, and other likely spots in their localities so it can be picked up and read by interested people. This would involve one or two days of distribution per issue, four times a year.
The Information Network will be a team of people who will help us get our message out to churches and groups throughout the state. We are looking for people who will serve as a local point of contact for MOPS groups, church groups, support groups, etc., and who will distribute information and literature for HEAV. If you are part of a group (or groups) that would appreciate hearing about all that HEAV has to offer, you can be an important part of our mission on an as-needed basis.
The Publicity Network will be a team of people willing to help us contact the media and get the word out about HEAV and our annual convention. Individuals can volunteer to take on a small piece of the job, such as calling all the radio stations in a certain county, or posting information about HEAV events to Yahoo/message groups.
The Web Layout Assistant will help in laying out new content on the HEAV website (formatting pages and articles). We use an Internet-based management system (MODx), which can be accessed anywhere via an Internet connection, so the assistant can work from any location. Assistant should have good computer skills (familiarity with Word documents, copying and pasting, etc.), and a desire to learn. This particular position is best suited for a homeschooled high school student interested in learning how to lay out content on the Internet.
We are continually searching for new articles and helpful content to put on our website. The Web Content Development Assistant would be responsible for helping to find uplifting information on a variety of different topics.
This position involves researching and recommending new member benefits for the organization and ensuring that member benefits are up-to-date on the website and in HEAV literature.
Our Special Programs Coordinators will work to advertise and promote the use of special fundraising programs to help generate revenue for HEAV. This currently includes Box Tops for Education, Food Lion Shop and Share, and the Ukrops’ Golden Gift Certificate program. We need people who will be responsible for each of these programs and who will work to increase homeschooler and community participation.
The Field-Trip/Educational Opportunities Team will be responsible for searching the state for educational and field-trip opportunities and collaborating with the Benefits Coordinator to gain discounts for our members at museums, historical sites, and special events. Many permanent and limited-time educational programs are available throughout the state, and we want to be sure the information is available via the HEAV Update, website, and magazine.
