Do You Know a Family Who Wants to Homeschool, But Can't Afford It?
Through their new Right Choice Program, the Home School Foundation is offering homeschool grants for families in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina who are in true financial need and meet certain criteria. Along with other things, the grant will provide resources to purchase curriculum.

The Home School Foundation is ready to help, but they are having a hard time getting the word out to families who need help. Please pass this information along to others, especially any families you know who might be interested. The website lists all the details.

Tip - Assessing Math
We recently came across this tip and thought some of you might find it helpful. We are reprinting it here with permission.

For mathematics, one way to "assess" is to start off this year by reviewing last year's material but with a role reversal. Mom says the topic to cover and child teaches concepts to mom. Not just "child works problem while mom watches." But "child explains concepts and why things are done while mom asks questions to probe for understanding." This is a great idea for ALL parents to do occasionally. The goal of mathematics education is not only "get them to be able to work the problems" but "make sure they understand the concepts well so that when things aren't just like the problems in the book they can still figure out how to do it."

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking 5) Parting Thought - When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
When you thought I wasn't looking
You hung my first painting on the refrigerator
And I wanted to paint another.

When you thought I wasn't looking
You fed a stray cat
And I thought it was good to be kind to animals.

When you thought I wasn't looking
You baked a birthday cake just for me
And I knew that little things were special things.

When you thought I wasn't looking
You said a prayer
And I believed there was a God that I could always talk to.

When you thought I wasn't looking
You kissed me good-night
And I felt loved.

When you thought I wasn't looking
I saw tears come from your eyes
And I learned that sometimes things hurt --
But that it's alright to cry.

When you thought I wasn't looking
You smiled
And it made me want to look that pretty too.

When you thought I wasn't looking
You cared
And I wanted to be everything I could be.

When you thought I wasn't looking --
I looked ...
And wanted to say thanks
For all those things you did
When you thought I wasn't looking.
