Sixth Annual Homeschool Chess Championships

Kids playing chess at the HEAV Chess TournamentWhether you’re an experienced chess player or just beginning, you won’t want to miss this fun morning of chess at HEAV’s 2014 Scholastic Chess Championships! Any homeschooled student in grade 12 or below who is registered for the convention can participate. Trophies will be awarded to the top player by age group!

Details

Where: In the Exhibit Hall at the 30th Annual HEAV Virginia Homeschool Convention in Richmond, Virginia.

When:  Friday, June 6, 2014, from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Cost: $10/player if registered by May 31; $15/player if registered by June 4;

A boy in a white shirt is playing chess.$20/player after June 4. (After June 4, you must register by calling 770-912-7665.)

How to sign up: If paying by credit card, visit the Chess Championship website, then click on K-12 Tournaments.

To pay by check, use the mail-in registration form here.

Chess board at the conventionSome Rules :

  • Touch/Move and Touch Capture: If you touch a piece, that’s the piece you must move,
    and if you touch an opponent’s piece, then you must capture it if it is a legal move.
  • No chess clocks or timers will be used, but players must make reasonable progress to complete a game. Chess notation is suggested, but not required. If writing down moves is slowing the game, the player will be asked to stop.
  • Participants must know how to complete a game.
  • No player is allowed to comment about any other ongoing game unless asked to by the tournament director.
