Saturday, August 16, 2014, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Workshops, activity sign up, and admission for shopping the UCS are free and require no registration.

This year’s expanded format at the August Activities Meeting will include a used curriculum sale, sign-ups for activities, vendors, and workshops.

The workshops “All About Co-Ops,” “How to Begin Homeschooling,” “What I Would Do Differently,” and “What Is the Charlotte Mason Approach?” will run from 1:10 p.m. to 2 p.m. The workshops “Home and Time Management,” “Homeschooling Through High School,” “Learning with Lap Books,” and “Homeschooling Classically Through High School” will run from 2:10 p.m. to 3 p.m.

If you have a business, service, or class that would be of interest to homeschoolers you can register for a table at this year’s RRHE August Activities Meeting. Your organization’s name and description will be given to the families who attend.

1.2 Homeschool Day at Historic Polegreen Church – Mechanicsville – Register by September 1

Historic Polegreen Church

Wednesday, October 1, 2014, from 10 a.m. to noon; it could run longer. Admission is free–bring a homeschool friend! Please wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothes! Feel free to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy at the site. Register by September 1.

Author and Polegreen Educational Advisory Council Member Jenny L. Cote will give a creative writing workshop as part of Homeschool Day at the Historic Polegreen Church site where Patrick Henry attended church as a boy. “Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Another Plot Line!” will cover Jenny’s research for her upcoming novel on Patrick Henry, The Voice, the Revolution, and the Jewel. Go behind the scenes of the famous speech that rallied a nation and discover how it actually began in Rome. Jenny will share how she is weaving together a fun plot line for this famous speech across two novels. A book signing will follow.

This free educational event, geared toward elementary through high school level, offers a glimpse into the rich history of Polegreen and its most famous visitor, Patrick Henry. Participants will enjoy living history presented by Bill Young, take a guided tour of the historic site, try their hand at Colonial games, make a Colonial craft, participate in a simulated archeological dig, and more!

1.3 Marine Science Adventure – Wallops Island – October 5-8

Sunday, October 5, through Wednesday, October 8, 2014, Cost: $165/adult or student (ages 5 through 18); children ages 4 and under are free. The price includes all instruction, field trips and transportation to field trip sites, materials, meals, and lodging (for resident students). Cost for commuters is $135/person; everything just listed is included except lodging. Students must attend with a parent or adult chaperone. A 50% deposit is required upon registration. There is no deadline, but the program could fill at any time.

This program is for homeschoolers who have attended a previous program. The three-day session includes a marsh class, boat trip, beach and dune ecology course, visit to restricted Wallops Island, and a waves and tides class. While all ages are welcome students must be nine years or older to attend the research boat trip.

1.4 Homeschoolers Robots and Rockets – Wallops Island – November 5-7

Wednesday, November 5, at 4:30 p.m. through Friday, November 7, 2014, at 10 a.m. Cost for resident campers: $145/adult or student (geared toward ages 10 through 15, but all ages are welcome). Cost for commuters is $115 and includes everything except lodging. Prices include all instruction, field trips and transportation to field trip sites, materials, meals, and lodging. Students must attend with a parent or adult chaperone. A 50% deposit is required upon registration. There is no deadline, but the program could fill at any time.

Attention all rocket scientists and future engineers! Create your own robots and rockets during this science-centered homeschool program. During this basic introduction to robotics and rocketry, students will learn about Newton’s Third Law (how rockets work), aerodynamics, and basic orbital mechanics. The camp is designed for boys and girls who want the thrill, excitement, and challenge of creating their own working machines. Students will work in groups to build and program a Lego Mindstorms NXT robot and then use their robot to complete a Mars Curiosity-themed obstacle course. Students will also construct and launch Estes model rockets which fly to about 300 feet! There will also be an exciting visit to the restricted NASA base for a launch facility tour.
