1.1 Homeschool Family Indoor Rock Climbing Open House Event – Midlothian – Register by April 25

Friday, May 2, 2014, from 1  p.m. to 3 p.m.  Cost: $10/participant (ages 4-adult); no charge for non-climbers. Modest shorts, T-shirt, and sneakers are recommended. Harness and helmet are included in fee. There is no obligation to join the class if you attend the open house event. Register by Friday, April 25, 2014.

Peak Experiences has operated the Homeschool Family Indoor Rock Climbing Class since September 2012 with great success! This open house will give you the opportunity to try indoor rock climbing at a no-obligation, reduced rate to determine if it’s right for you. Indoor rock climbing builds confidence and thinking skills, and offers family time, too–parents are encouraged to try it!

1.2 Pony School and Camp – Chesapeake – Register by April 26

Runs from May through August 2014, Wednesdays, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., or from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; alternatively on Sundays, from noon to 2:30 p.m., or from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Cost: $150/month (Wednesdays); $100/month (Sundays). Open to riders ages five and up who can make a four-month commitment. Long pants and boots with a 1/4″ heel are required; riding helmets will be provided. Register by Wednesday, April 26.

There is a maximum of six students per class where students will learn everything from basic horse care to riding. They will help with the care of all of the ponies and other animals on the farm, hear guest speakers, take educational classroom lessons about horses and ponies, and do fun arts and crafts.

1.3 Homeschool to College Seminar Day – Williamsburg – April 29

Tuesday, April 29, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Keynote Speaker begins at 9 a.m. Cost: $10/adult; $5/teen (ages 13 through 19). Dads and grandparents will be guests when you purchase one adult ticket; this does not apply to other relatives. Childcare will be available from the Phi Kappa Honor Society. The 4th Annual Homeschool to College Seminar Day will feature Anne Miller of HEAV. You can also meet representatives from the Norfolk Police Academy, the West Point Fire Department, William and Mary, ODU, VCU, UVA, Thomas Nelson, Regent University, and Liberty University! Knowledgeable speakers will present mini-seminars on transcripts, testing, dual enrollment, homeschool guidance counseling, the common college application, and academic resume.

1.4 Virginia Homeschool Prom: “An Evening at Gatsby’s” – Charlottesville – Deadline Is May 1 or When Sold Out

1.5 Homeschool Day: Arts Alive in Salem – Winston-Salem, NC – Best Price by May 16

The Moravians, who founded Salem in 1766, were widely known for their music as well as their trades and such crafts as pottery, cabinetry, guns, silver and tin wares, and textiles. Music and the arts were interwoven into the daily life of Salem through work, worship, and education.

This day of hands-on arts-based activities and demonstrations throughout the historic town of Salem will let you experience the wonderful history and heritage of “Arts Alive in Salem” including a puppet show and a look at early childhood in Salem through a photographic study. Learn about the Moravian legacy of music–both secular and sacred–and hear the Tannenberg organ. Try block printing and theorem painting, learn about Moravian decorated pottery, and much more.

1.7 Homeschool Family Indoor Rock Climbing Class Summer Session – Midlothian – May 23-August 15

Fridays, May 23 through August 15, 2014, from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cost: $150/month for one parent and two children (ages 4 through adult); $25/additional participant; $25/surcharge climbers under age eight. 1.8 Homeschooler Coastal Samplers – Wallops Island – June 4-6 or June 11-13

Wednesday, June 4, 2014, at 4:30 p.m., through Friday, June 6 at 9 a.m.

Wednesday, June 11, at 4:30 p.m., through Friday, June 13 at 9 a.m. Cost: $95/adult or child (ages 0 through 18; students must attend the program with a parent or adult chaperone). The price includes all instruction, fieldtrips, transportation to field trip sites, materials, meals, and lodging.

The Homeschoolers Coastal Sampler is a hands-on program open to all ages. Classes offered will include crabbing, beach exploration on restricted Wallops Island, fish dissection, kayaking, fish printing, and organism study with microscope work. Evening programs include a rousing family camp fire with songs and skits and a seafood feast served family style. Families can pick and choose activities based on age range and interest.
