1.1 Tell Me a Story – Smithfield – Monthly Series Runs January 16 Through May 15

Thursday, January 16, 2014; continuing on February 20; March 20; April 10, and May 15; all from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Admission to the museum is free. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The museum is closed Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Tell Me a Story is free and open to the public; reservations are not required, although groups of 10 or more are asked to contact the museum prior to the event.

Tell Me a Story is a monthly program designed to introduce youngsters to the symbols of Isle of Wight County through books, games, and crafts. The event is designed for children ages three to five and their families. Scheduled themes for each month are January, black bears; February, spices; March, alpacas; April, country stores; and May, herbs. Exact story titles are usually available approximately a week before the individual program.

Parents of a high school student–or close? Come to a convenient one-day workshop, “High School at Home: Turning Possibility into Reality” with HSLDA’s Diane Kummer.

After check-in from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., explore high school plans and transcripts before lunch. Then learn about the most important deadlines and “pit stops” during high school and get a confidence boost. You can do it! Finish with a Q and A session.

1.3 Homeschool Science Fair – Manassas – Register by January 24

Saturday, March 8, 2014, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is no admission fee to view the exhibits. Cost for exhibitors: $7.50/student (kindergarten through grade 12); $15/family. Register by the morning of January 24.

HOPE, the Home Organization of Parent Educators, invites you and your students to explore the scientific work other kids are doing or enter a project yourself! This science fair is an opportunity for students to display and talk about their projects. Judges will talk to each participant and present awards for each age group.

1.4 Museum of the Confederacy-Appomattox Homeschooling Parent-Teacher Night Out – Appomattox – Register by January 29

Friday, January 31, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. (inclement weather date is February 7) This event, for parents only, is free of charge. Bring a homeschooling friend! Registration is required by January 29, 2014.

Parents who are homeschooling their children are invited to “get away” for an evening at the Museum of the Confederacy-Appomattox. You will have an opportunity to meet and socialize with other homeschooling parents, enjoy refreshments, tour the gallery, and learn about the educational programs offered for school-aged children, including their new program, “Important People of the Civil War and Reconstruction.” The gift shop/bookstore will offer a 10% discount that evening.

Final registration ends the morning of February 22.
