Saturday, April 6, 2013, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost: $17/adult (ages 13 and up); $10/child (ages 3 through 12); free for those under age 3.
The VLM is welcoming spring with a daylong family event devoted to birds. Meet live birds of prey. Visit the “All About Birds” table filled with bird mounts, eggs, and feathers from the museum’s collections. Try your hand at building a bird’s nest and get moving with bird activities on the lawn (weather permitting). Make bird-themed crafts and treats for birds. Find out how you can attract hummingbirds and songbirds to your backyard.
Enjoy the new Children’s Play Area and Children’s Learning Garden, refurbished to exhibit plant life cycles and pollination, and to encourage composting and recycling.

Deadline for submitting entries from the first six months of 2013 is July 15, 2013; deadline for submitting articles from the remainder of 2013 is January 15, 2014, but the total for the year cannot exceed ten. Submit articles that have been published in a secular journalistic outlet such as a city or college newspaper, a local or national magazine, or a news website. First prize is $10,000; second prize is $5,000; third prize is $4,000; fourth prize is $3,000; and fifth prize is $2,000. Up to 10 more awards of outstanding merit are $1,000 each.
