Q. I never thought I’d be asking this question, but what should I do if I want to begin homeschooling now? I know I’ve missed the deadline, so what is the process?
A. This is a question we’re often asked this time of year. The process is essentially the same as it is prior to the August 15 deadline–with one exception: If your child is enrolled in a public school, you must withdraw him from the school. It is recommended that you first file a “Notice of Intent” with your local school superintendent, and then withdraw your child from school. For the step-by-step process, click here.
In order to help you get off to a good start, we have scheduled two Homeschool Success Seminars that include helpful information for beginners. “How to Begin Homeschooling: What You Really Need to Know,” is scheduled at the HEAV office in Richmond on Friday, January 11, 2013. If you’ll be teaching a high school student, join us at the same location on Friday, January 18, for “High School at Home: The Path to Success.” You can find seminar descriptions and registration information here.
