1.1 Earth and Life Science Classes – Vienna – Begin January 16

Earth Science
Wednesday, January 16, 2013, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; continues on January 23 and 30, February 6 and 13. Cost: $42/county resident student (ages 11 through 15 for the five-week session); $57/non-resident. Price includes the program and some supplies; however, a supply fee is payable to the instructor at the first class.

Dig into the study of the earth. Explore and experiment with plate tectonics, the rock cycle, the atmosphere and weather, and the climate of our planet.

Life Science
Thursday, January 17, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; continues on January 24 and 31, February 7 and 14. Cost: $42/county resident student (ages 11 through 15 for the five-week session); $57/non-resident. Price includes the program and some supplies; however a supply fee is payable to the instructor at the first class.

Investigate changes, cycles, and patterns in the living world. Through naturalist-led activities, students explore the dynamic relationships that occur in nature between plants, animals, and their environment.

1.2 Valiant Warrior Quilting – Purcellville – January 18 through 27

Friday, January 18, 2013, through Sunday, January 27. Hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 9 p.m.; Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. The event is free and open to anyone age eight and up.

Join to make quilts for our nation’s wounded warriors–or “Valiant Warriors”–any time from January 18 through 27. No experience is necessary and all materials will be provided. Mark your calendars and spread the word! The project will gladly accept donations of red, white, or blue cotton fabrics; earth-tone cotton fabrics; or functional, old sewing machines that you’re no longer using. Donations will be used in the various quilt projects including quilts for wounded frontline troops, bed quilts for a retreat center, and lap quilts.

Joshua’s Hands also requests your prayers as they continue to look for ways to pay for the repair and renovation of the old barn to house their work.

Fearless Public Speaking
Monday, January 21, 2013, from 10:20 a.m. to 11:20 a.m.; continues each Monday for 16 weeks. Cost: $190/student (grades 7 through 12).There is a $35 registration fee if you are not already enrolled in CHESS. Modest materials and copy fees may apply.

Time spent in an effective public speaking course is an investment in the future! Every career depends on the persuasive transfer of information in an engaging fashion (and being an active listener to your boss)! Begin that training in a fun, no-stress atmosphere where humor is welcome and peers are supportive. Start small and build in an organized fashion. See yourself on videotape and learn to remain relaxed in the spotlight. There are no holiday assignments.

SAT/PSAT Math Prep class
Wednesday, January 16, 2013, from 4:10 p.m. to 5:10 p.m.; continues each Wednesday for 16 weeks. Cost: $190/student (grades 10 through 12), There is a $35 registration fee if you are not already enrolled in CHESS. Some discounts may be available. Students must have completed algebra and geometry for this course to be of benefit. Completion or current enrollment in at least Algebra 2 is recommended. Students must purchase most recent edition of The Official SAT Study Guide by the College Board. Contact admin@chessclasses.org for the current ISBN.

The class will mostly review algebra and geometry in preparation for the SATs. The class helps prepare students for the question style in the SATs, which is somewhat different than in many standard texts. Students will be provided a study plan and regular homework, including practice tests.

1.4 Homeschool Day at Riverbend Park – Great Falls – February 15

Friday, February 15, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free and open to homeschooling families with children from approximately age 5 through 12. Dress for the weather and bring a lunch if you wish. RSVP so they can plan for guests.

Come to Riverbend Park for an enrichment of your homeschool curriculum. The park’s hands-on, experiential programs can expand your science, nature, and physical education classes. This homeschool day will feature hiking, outdoor games, meeting some animals, and science experiments.
