8895 George Collins Parkway
New Market, VA
Saturday, October 27, 2012, every 15 minutes from 7 p.m. until 8:45 p.m. Cost: $10/adult; $5/youth (6 through 17 years old); children five years old and under enter free. Purchase tickets at the Virginia Museum of the Civil War at New Market Battlefield on the day of the event.
The sights, sounds, and smells of the battlefield will be all around you as you travel back in time and walk in the footsteps of Union and Confederate soldiers–as well as a local family–on the New Market Battlefield. Hear the tales of the Virginia Military Institute Cadets as they recount their historic involvement in the 1864 Battle of New Market. Costumed interpreters will share their stories as if it is the night after the battle. (Note: sponsors state this is a historical interpretation, not a “ghost story” type of event.)
See the website for more information, or call 540-740-3101 or 866-515-1864. The website still has the date for the 2011 event, but all the other information is accurate.
The Bland Music Scholarship is a series of progressive vocal and instrumental music contests sponsored by the Lions of Virginia; local winners advance to compete at additional levels. It is open to students in middle or high school grades who live or attend school in Virginia. Deadlines vary by location; entry-level contests will be held throughout the state in January and February 2013. Six vocal and six instrumental finalists will compete in the final state-level competition on May 31, 2013, in Bristol, Virginia, for scholarships totaling $18,000. Entrants will need a memorized piece of music not exceeding eight minutes in length. A number of homeschoolers have placed very well in recent years.
See the website for more information, or contact Bland Foundation chairman, Vickie Yanics, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 301-449-9153. She will put you in touch with an entry-level chairman in your area.
Saturday, January, 26, 2013. Cost (register and pay before December 31, 2012): $45/student; $60/adult. Cost after December 31: $55/student; $75/adult. Tickets will include lunch and dinner. Registration is open now.
There will be tracks for high school and college students, special receptions for law and medical students, a pro-life job and internship fair, and a leader summit for those who are currently leading pro-life campus groups. See the agenda for a list of the keynote messages and break out sessions.
